Dr. Boris Stoilov, D.M.

I will try to tell you about myself in a few lines and especially about my professional development.
Д-р Борис Стоилов
Obstetrician-gynecologist, consultant in Fetal Medicine
I was born in Plovdiv in 1981 in the former Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of First City Hospital, currently St. Mina General Hospital for Active Treatment Ltd. I graduated from. St. Cyril and Methodius High School of Humanities with a focus in the English language. My childhood dream was to become a doctor and I was strongly influenced by my grandfather – Dr. Boris Krastev, who was the most inflectional person I have ever known. He was a paediatric rheumatoid cardiologist and head of the Children’s Department at First City Hospital. The doctors who he worked with regarded him as incredible specialist. What made a lasting impression on me, was the amount of people that would stop him in the streets, admire him and thank him for his help. My grandfather was a very intelligent, well-mannered and erudite man, who would read several books a week, even up to the end of his life.

Thank you Grandpa, for raising, educating and offering help at any given moment and most importantly, inspiriting me to become a doctor.
I graduated Medicine from the Medical University in Plovdiv in 2005. Due to several gap years of specialization, I began as a volunteer in cardiac surgery at St. George University General Hospital for Active Treatment EAD, I served my military service, worked as a medical representative for a short time, and in an emergency care centre.

The next step in my career was the most significant and I’m glad I did it. I wanted to work at an obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit no matter what, although I still did not know when I could be put on the list for specialization. For this reason, I went to the obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit of St. Mina General Hospital Ltd. and I asked Dr. Drenski to work as a volunteer.
He agreed and so I began my professional career as an obstetrician-gynecologist on the Women’s Holiday, March 8th 2007. Soon after, Dr. Drenski became my mentor, teacher, and even friend. He and my aunt, Dr. Elena Krasteva, were the people who taught, guided, supported and corrected me. They were my greatest teachers! From my first working day, they did everything in their power to share their huge professional and personal experience with me. For this, I give many thanks!
In the spring of 2009, I started working in the UK. Since then, I have been inducted into the official register of medical practitioners within the United Kingdom (GMC) and have annually passed a series of trainings and audits. In 2010 I graduated a master’s degree program in Business Administration with a specialty in Health Management at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia.

In the autumn of 2009, I started my specialization in obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Medical University of Plovdiv, and the practical training center of the obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at St. George University General Hospital EAD. Initiall, I worked under the guidance of Prof. Milchev, and after 2011 under the guidance of Prof. Pehlivanov.

From 2011 until 2014 I worked at Selena Specialized obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital Ltd. in Plovdiv. During this period, in 2010, I finished my master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialty in Health Management at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia. I had successfully passed the state exam and since January 1st, 2014 I have been a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In my opinion, an obstetrician-gynecologist who provides antenatal care needs a very high level of competence and an in-depth knowledge of fetal medicine. This was the reason why I went to London, UK and sub-specialize in Fetal Medicine under the direction of the ‘father’ of this specialty in the world, namely Professor Kypros Nicolaides. My training lasted for 2 years and several months from 2014 until 2016 and was rigorous, extremely busy, highly effective and concluded with high results. My training was mainly at Kings College Hospital, but also at University College London Hospital, Medway Hospital and Southend University Hospital. In spite of all the difficulties and perplexities I have experienced, I have gained invaluable experience and knowledge. Having worked with the world’s best specialists in Fetal Medicine, I have greatly increased my professional development.
I am still learning, searching, trying to find answers and striving for improvement... I hope I will succeed!
